Ginger Ale
Ginger Ale is a collaboration between SONG, The Vibe, and sometimes others for Richmond’s BlackQueer community and allies. This is a lo-fi connection and strategy space. Bring your journal, vision board, benevolent ancestors, favorite tea, overdue work, weird ideas, sour mood, tarot cards, strange dreams, exhaustion, fears, and hopes.
RSVP is important so we can plan a space for you. We may cap RSVPs at 50 to prevent overcrowding, or move to a larger space.
COVID Care
- All guests must test negative for COVID and mask for the first 90ish minutes.
- A positive test means you will be sent back with love to keep our folks safe.
- An air purifier will be operating during the entire gathering.
- After ~90 minutes, food will be available for those comfortable unmasked with the group.
- If you prefer to stay masked, you can head outdoors or depart when food begins.
The Location
- We gather in a small home that is unfortunately not ADA compliant.
- It’s intimate with a choppy layout that can seat ten snugly in the living room.
- Please respect the home and notify us of any spills right away.
- If more than 10 are present at one time, folks who can do so comfortably may be asked to sit on the floor.
- Free street parking is available, with overflow parking available.
- Several cats may be outside near the home or porch. They are half feral and have names they won’t answer to.
What to Expect
- We usually discuss local organizing efforts or offer an optional activity.
- Participation is optional, and we encourage vulnerability at your pace.
- We may provide bracelets, lanyards, or pins for those who want to stay to themselves or focus on a task.
- We’ll likely play chill music or screen a Black film as folks arrive.
- During peak attendance, we’ll share brief updates about the SONG campaign, local news, and events.
- If the room fills up, we’ll create a breakout room.
Why Come?
This space was created by younger millennials wanting low-stimulation community spaces that encourage connection. We believe in the healing necessity of community for BlackQueer folks’ survival in the rise of fascism. We want more intimate BlackQueer spaces in Richmond, so we made one. Investing in community can be awkward, inconvenient, and sometimes messy. At a small scale, we hope to grow meaningful connections. At a larger scale, we can shift the culture and politics of greater Richmond in our favor. May what we pour in return to us multiplied.
Who All Gon Be There?
Invitation is by word of mouth. You have this link because you are likely within two degrees of separation of one of the organizers. We’re rooted in relationship. Please share only with people whose values contribute to vibrant and joyous BlackQueer futures. You are accountable for who you invite.
Attendees are likely between 25–45, live in/near Richmond, have diverse faith/spiritual practices, and have a liberated or radical politic. This space is for Black people across the diaspora.
